Provincial Championships - Saturday, March 7th
Saturday, March 7th marks the date for the annual Alberta Provincial Championships. All students from white to black belt are encouraged to participate, or at least attend and support fellow competitors. WESTERN CANADA HIGH SCHOOL 641 - 17TH Avenue S.W. Calgary, Alberta
This is the same venue as in 2006 and 2007, so it should be easy to find. The competition will get under way at 9:00 a.m. so please DO NOT BE LATE FOR REGISTRATION!! The competition fee is $30.00 per student for one or more events entered. Everyone remember - compete with good spirit, good camaraderie, and to all of you… GOOD LUCK!!
Sensei Yaguchi Seminars and Examinations - April 17-19th
Sensei Yaguchi holds seminars for green to black belts on Friday night, with all dan examinations taken directly afterwards. Saturday’s schedule includes more seminars in the morning, with kyu examinations following. Both Sensei Yaguchi and Sensei Jones travel to Edmonton to hold seminars and examinations there on Sunday, April 19th.
All students must have their 2009 ISKF dues paid for before they will be granted permission to take an exam. A schedule will be available closer to the event.
Children’s and Adult W/Y/O belt Seminar and Examinations - April 25th
All children and adult W/Y/O belts from Calgary and outer laying areas are welcome to attend this seminar and examination (with the approval of your Sensei), which is held at the Japan Karate Association of Calgary dojo. All students must ensure that they have paid their 2009 ISKF fees before they can take the examination.
A schedule for the seminar and examinations will be available closer to the event.
Western Canadian Camp and Championships - May 16-18th
We are very pleased to have this event back in our annual schedule, after having to cancel it due to the 2008 Canadian Nationals being held that weekend last year. This camp and competition will be held once again on the picturesque University of Saskatchewan campus. As always, Saskatchewan’s Marcel Lussier will be hosting the camp, with host instructors to be announced sooner to the date. With the proximity of the camp to Calgary, as well as the number of excellent instructors and classes available, this is one camp you should make sure not to miss. It is a great camp for families to attend together.
On the last day of camp we hold a tournament, and everyone is encouraged to participate. There will be students from all over B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, which will make for a very friendly, challenging, and exciting competition. We hope to see you there!!
Master Camp - Philadelphia, PA - June 12th - 19th
This great karate camp is held over the week of June 12-19th and is located about 1 hour outside of the city of Philadelphia in a beautiful wooded area called “Camp Greenlane”. Outstanding instruction is provided by some of the very best instructors in the US and Canada.
You are awoken at 6:00 a.m. to train your first class of the day, have a great breakfast, train again at 11:00, and finish off the day with 1 ½ hour classes at 4:00 p.m. The week ends with a Good Will Tournament which provides one with the opportunity to competition with fellow karate-ka from all over the world!
For those of you who are serious karate-ka, this camp is a MUST!!

July marks the second examination period of the year. Sensei Yaguchi Seminars and Examinations - July 17-19th
This July camp is held at the Japan Karate Association dojo, and provides karate-ka with classes Friday evening, Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday morning. All dan examinations will be held on the Friday evening, with the kyu exams given Sunday afternoon. There will be a special kumite class given by Sensei Taylor from Edmonton which will take place sometime Saturday afternoon.
All students are to have their 2009 ISKF dues paid for before they will be granted permission to take an examination. A schedule for the seminar and examinations will be available closer to the event.
Denver Camp and Competition - July 30th - Aug. 2nd
This great karate camp is hosted by Sensei Yaguchi, and is held over the August long weekend. The venue is at the University of Colorado, which is located in the town of Greeley, approximately 30 minutes outside of Denver. The past years have seen students from all over the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The camp provides a diverse number of classes available for all levels of karate-ka, taught by Masters Okazaki and Yaguchi, as well as a number of guest instructors. The camp finishes up with a good-will tournament for all levels and for all who are interested in competing.
All the attending karate-ka are put up in residence at the University, and all meals are provided in the University’s cafeteria. Those of us leaving from Calgary usually ride in convoy…….it is a long trip, but with a large group of students travelling together, the time goes by quickly!! Anyone needing transportation is easily accommodated. Everyone is encouraged to attend!!
Canadian National Championships - Calgary, Alberta - October 9-12th
October 9-12th marks the dates for the annual Canadian National Championships - and it is to be held HERE in Calgary this year!! This will be the opportunity of a lifetime, as with no travel expenses involved, there is no excuse not to take advantage of the opportunity to get involved in the competition!! All brown and black belt students, both juniors and adults, are welcome to participate. There is the annual club tournament (brown belts), along with the junior tournament which is held on the Saturday, with the adult black belt competition running all day Sunday. There will be competitors from all over Canada, which makes for a very friendly, challenging, and exciting competition!!
